The Murder Capital of the World

Well, not anymore at least. In 1988 Time Magazine dubbed Medellín, Colombia as the most dangerous city in the world. But a lot can change in 25 years.  Who would’ve thought, I went somewhere else this month. Literally 4 days after coming home from the coast, the family took another trip; this time to Medellín. The purpose, once again, was for the parents’ work, but we got to tag along and turn it into a vacation. Tuesday morning  (June 18th) we left bright and early. Bogotá and Medellín are both within the Andes Mountains, but are separated by a huge valley where the mountain range splits. This made the two-lane roadway super long and dizzyingly winding for the majority of the time, and kind of like a video game to pass the slow semi trucks without getting hit by oncoming traffic. It was stressful to say the least. The only things that made it better were the amazing views and clean mountain air. The environment was a mix between jungle and forest, and there wasn’t a single...

Visiting Paradise. Twice

Hello! I would talk about my week at FSY that I just got back from, but I still have our vacation to the coast to talk about. Also, a clarification before we begin, please read this straight from the blog if you receive it as an email, it solves issues with formatting. Just click anywhere really. Also, for my beautiful Colombian friends who read it translated into Spanish, google translate is very imperfect  and a lot of things get messed up and sometimes are super inaccurate. It also sometimes repeats paragraphs several times, so just be aware it's not me, and I don't know how to solve it. Sorry. Anywhooo, starting from where we left off, we headed out Monday morning, the 10th, for Barranquilla. We took a transit van for the 4 hour ride, which we caught at a bus terminal. The station was so weird, it was like a little airport but without security and dirtier. We bought the tickets from the transport company, they tagged our bags, and we were off. I wrote a bit and tried not to...

I Finally Left Bogotá

Hey everyone, how ya been? The past week or so we've spent in Cartagena, which is this beautiful city on the coast. We flew here the 4th, and I've been enjoying being on vacation quite a bit. Some backstory on this. The biggest reason we're here is for the parents to do their seminars, but they brought us along so we're doubling up and doing vacation at the same time. Basically they do one of these seminars in every major city in Colombia once a year, and from what I've gathered their business works with horizontal property and legalities? I don't really know. Tania (the mom of my household) grew up in Cartagena and she has a whole bunch of family here, so they come decently often. On Tuesday we arrived, I stepped off the plane, and was just punched in the face by the heat and humidity. I know I complained about the humidity in my last post, but this is on another level. It only gets to about 85 degrees, but it's so humid it feels like you're melt...

Hey everybody, it’s been a while. I love how in my last blog post I committed to writing more frequently, and then I was silent for almost three (it’s now been 6) months. In my defense, the WiFi was down all of the following week, and then I lost access to a computer for a while; but I’ll explain all that later. SO much has happened, oh my gosh. Luckily I’ve been keeping a list of all the things I want to write about (it’s a typed full 2 ½ pages of bullet points), so hopefully I can do a decent job of making up for all that lost time. For a really long while, I felt so guilty about “losing” so many memories that I’ll now never write about. But I think I need to just let it go, so I’ve decided I’ll just write and write until I’m completely caught up, which will probably mean many more blog posts coming very very soon. I’m actually writing this on the airplane, we’re about 2 hours away from Salt Lake, and the rain on the cabin roof is really helping to ease my stress and just relax. It w...
